EQI (Effective Quality Index)
Heat treatment of milk during processing or exposure to very acidic or basic pH conditions can denature bioactive whey proteins, and may significantly reduce their bioactivity and functionality
Finished products may be marketed with low levels of bioactive whey protein per dose, or contain proteins extracted from whey using manufacturing methods or processing conditions that result in little bioactivity/functionality.
Currently there is no effective way for consumers to differentiate between products containing whey proteins that are “bioactive” and can support positive health outcomes with those that contain very low levels of bioactives or have been processed in such a way that they have very limited functionality and support for health.
EQI – Effective Quality Index
The EQI index is based on a standardised bioactivity testing protocol. EQI assesses the quality and quantity of bioactive whey proteins in finished products – verifying their ability to support positive health outcomes
Quantec are working with independant laboratories to establish a network of accredited EQI testing facilities. Use of an accredited testing laboratory will allow brands to use EQI branding on their products. This provides consumers with assurance that the product they are purchasing will support their targeted health outcomes
