Management of Mastitis in Dairy Herds

Mastitis continues to be of considerable significance to the dairy industry due to economic losses which have been shown to vary from NZ$50-$90 per treated case.  These costs are based on . . .

  • lowered production
  • discarded milk
  • drug costs
  • veterinary fees
  • downgraded milk quality

Despite best efforts to treat the disease, current antibiotic-based treatments have not decreased the incidence of mastitis in lactating dairy cows, which still range from 28-35 clinical cases per 100 cows per lactation.  For example, reviews of the efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (Bramley and Dodd, 1984; Owens et al., 1988) report success rates ranging from 15% to 70%.

Development of NMR

Quantec has developed a new antimicrobial formulation for prevention and/or treatment of mastitis in dairy cows that has the advantage of being naturally-derived, thus requiring no withholding period for milk. This product is called NMR (Natural Mastitis Remedy)

This formulation is based on Quantec’s proprietary fraction of milk that has powerful anti-microbial activity, as well as being a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Taken from normal milk from healthy animals, this fraction is based on the cow’s natural immune defense system, which is present to protect the cow from mastitic infection.

One of the key advantages listed for the most well-known milk-derived bioactives, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase, is their antimicrobial activity.  However, Quantec discovered that the inhibitory effects against mastitis pathogens diminished as the cationic bioactive fractions, such as Lf and Lp, became more purified.  Since these proteins comprise the bulk of the mammary gland’s immune

defense protein system, it followed that there would be synergistic actions between other discrete bioactives, which actually leads to a successful immune response.  Higher purity did not equate to better efficacy.  This led to the discovery that concentrating, rather than purifying, these immune defense proteins resulted in a successful naturally-derived inhibitory product.

MSI-Innovate-Grow-eBooklet2The resulting natural mastitis formulation is . . .

  • a natural product based on innate immune defense proteins that present in milk.
  • a powerful antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
  • not an antibiotic and does not require milk withholding.
  • completely safe for intramammary administration into lactating dairy cows.
  • shown to be effective against the following mastitis-causing organisms:

Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcus uberis
Streptococcus agalactiae
Streptococcus dysgalactiae
Streptococcus equisimilus
Escherichia coli

Quantec has an extensive portfolio of experimental results supporting these claims.

Quantec also has a portfolio of supporting patents on the proprietary formulations.  For more information about these applications, please contact Quantec.
